SCAM ALERT

SCAM ALERT

11/06/2020 - Citizens are getting calls from scam artists portraying themselves as members of the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office.  The scam relates to threats of arrest unless the victim goes and purchases a Money Pak card.  The scammer will have the victim provide the numbers off of the card as payment to avoid being arrested.  The phone numbers appearing on the victim’s phone shows the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office phone number, but the suspects are using tools to spoof their numbers to pretend to be law enforcement.  The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office nor any Law Enforcement Agency would have you pay for a bond/fine/or fee to avoid jail over the phone.  These matters would be handled in person through formal meetings, not with a Money Pak or Green Dot card.  The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office has responded to multiple complaints regarding this scam and ask you if you receive a call or think you may have been scammed please contact the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office to report the matter.

Fraud Alert – Check Scam

10/26/2020 - We have received this week numerous cases concerning Canadian County Residents receiving unsolicited checks from different out of state companies. These checks are typically delivered in priority mail envelopes. These checks which appear to be company checks are counterfeit and forgeries. The subjects mailing the checks to the potential victim then contact the victim by phone or email and state the check was sent to the victim by mistake and asking the victim to deposit the check. They ask the victim to keep $200 to $500 for their trouble and to send the balance of the money from the check back to them in a cashier check or postal money order. Sometime after that the victim will receive notification from the bank that the check was counterfeit, thus the victim is out approximately $1000.00 or more dollars. If you receive these unsolicited checks do not cash or deposit the check contact this office or your local law enforcement office. Any questions you have concerning this Fraud, contact Lt. Mike Grimes, Criminal Investigation, Canadian County Sheriff’s Office, 405-262-3434
