** SCAM ALERT **

5/03/2021 - The Canadian County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Unit was contacted today about a new version of an old scam to be alert to. The caller is claiming to be Undersheriff Kevin Ward from the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office and that the person being called failed to appear to testify as a witness. The victim was then told there is 2 Federal warrants for their arrest and they are for $3,500.00 each and they will have to bring the cash money to the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office in El Reno. The person calling requires the victim to stay on the phone the entire time to keep the victim from calling anyone for verification purposes. The caller will typically use the name of a legitimate member of the Sheriff’s Office, as an example in this case Kevin Ward is the Undersheriff of the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office. If you get a call like this hang up and call the Agency they are claiming to represent, do this by calling the published number for that agency, not a number they give you. No Law Enforcement Agency will require you to stay on the phone reference a warrant.   BE AWARE: THE CANADIAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WILL NOT CALL YOU AND ASK YOU TO BRING CASH FOR A WARRANT. Any questions concerning these type of phone scams contact the CCSO Criminal Investigations Unit, Lt. Mike Grimes.
