Canadian County Sheriff Chris West announced today that on Monday, May 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office will have a dedication service for the placement of a law enforcement memorial to commemorate the four Canadian County sheriff’s deputies who have lost their lives safeguarding the citizens of Canadian County. The memorial will be placed on the east side of the courthouse, south of the main entrance this week and ready for the service on Monday. The dedication service will include a history of the four deputies whose names are displayed on the memorial, a proclamation by County Commissioner David Anderson, and remarks by District Attorney Mike Fields.
The monument was funded through a private donation to the sheriff’s office, and the placement location approved by the Canadian County Commissioners.
The honored deputies which are inscribed on the memorial are as follows: Deputy Sam Farris, May 23, 1894; Sgt. Gary Garrison, February 1, 2014; Lt. Shirley Lanning, February 14, 2020; Deputy Justin Baxter, September 8, 2022.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
