Applicant Checklist

Please bring the following items with you when you are turning in your Self-Defense Act (SDA) Handgun Licensing paperwork:

  • $100 or $200 to OSBI (depending on if you are applying for 5 or 10 years) Must be: Money Order, or Cashier’s Check - No cash
  • $25 to the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office Must be: Cash (Exact Change), Money Order, or Cashier’s Check - No credit cards
  • Completed SDA application
  • Current Canadian County resident
  • Original signed training certificate
  • Two recent passport photos

Do Not Bring

You should not bring the following with you:

  • Cell phones
  • Children
  • Pocket knives 
  • Purses
  • Weapons of any kind

Application Process

The Sheriff’s Office will do a background check on you for Canadian County and fingerprint you. Once we have approved you at the county level, we will forward your application to Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) who will do a background check for the State of Oklahoma. Once they have approved you at the State level, OSBI will forward the application to the FBI who will do a background check on you for across the Nation. Once final approval is received, the FBI will notify OSBI, who will in turn notify you by mail. OSBI will have a three month time frame or longer to do all of the above. OSBI will mail your license to the address listed on your application.
